How to Install Custom Firmware 4.01 M33-2 on your PSP

Dark Alex has done it again! What should we ever do without him. The most awaited custom firmware has finally been released. Now, I know this post might be a bit late, I’ve been having problems with my DSL connection and I haven’t been online for days, but I know a lot of you guys are still waiting for this. It is true time to turn out to be a mcp via grasping unsurpassed microsoft certification as mcts.

So what are the new features of this custom firmware? This new custom firmware has all the features the 4.01 official firmware has plus a few extras. Many people are asking me if it’s worth installing it and my answer is a YES. I have 4.01 M33-2 custom firmware installed already on my phat PSP and I haven’t encountered any bugs yet. But don’t take my word for it. Try it yourself. You can always revert back to your old 3.90 M33-3 if you want.

So much for the rambling. Here are the instructions on how to install the new custom firmware on your PSP.

Requirements

As always, please do check that you pass all the requirements before you can do the installation.

  • A Fat PSP or Slim PSP already installed with a custom firmware. At least 3.52 M33-4 custom firmware must be installed on your Fat PSP and 3.60 M33 for the slim.
  • A fully charged battery. I know it will run on 70% battery but 100% battery with the AC adapter plugged is the safest setup.
  • A USB cable to transfer files from your computer to your PSP.
  • The 4.01 M33-2 installer pack that I created for easy install. Download the 4.01 M33-2 installer pack and unzip on your computer.

The Steps

The steps are divided into 3. Please follow the directions carefully. I will not be held responsible for any bricks. Do this at your own risk! But I’m 100% sure you won’t brick your precious PSP if you follow the instructions carefully.

Step A – Installing the 4.01 M33 custom firmware

  1. Connect your PSP to your computer using the USB cable. Open the Step A folder and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME/. After copying, disconnect the PSP from your computer.
  2. On the XMB menu on your computer, navigate to GAME > Memory Stick and run the 4.01 M33 update. When you run the update, the screen turns black. Follow the text instructions. It will take you to the Official Sony Update screen. That is normal. Continue with the process following the instructions.
  3. The Sony Updater will run. Don’t turn off your PSP or interrupt the update. After the Update, you will be asked to press a certain button to restart your PSP. Do so.
  4. Congratulations, your PSP is installed with 4.01 M33 custom firmware now. On to Step B.

Step B – Installation of the 4.01 M33 update

  1. You can only do this if you are successful with Step A. Connect your PSP to your computer. On your memory stick, navigate to PSP/GAME and delete the UPDATE folder.
  2. Now open STEP 2 folder to your computer and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME/. Disconnect your PSP from the computer once you are done.
  3. On the XMB menu, scroll to GAME > Memory Stick and run the 4.01 M33-2 update. Just follow the onscreen instructions and you’ll be safe.
  4. After the installation, you will be returned to the XMB screen.
  5. Congratulations on your 4.01 M33-2 PSP.

Step C – 1.50 Kernel Add-on Installation Guide

  1. This last set of steps is optional. You may do this or not. The next set of steps will be instructions on how to install the 1.50 Kernel Add on for the Fat PSP. Sorry slim owners.
  2. Connect your PSP to your computer. Open Step C folder and then copy 150.PBP file from your computer to the root directory of your memory stick. And then copy 4XX folder from your computer to ms0:/PSP/.
  3. Exit the USB mode and on your XMB, navigate to GAME > Memory Stick and then run the 1.50 Kernel Add-on program. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. After the installation is successful, you will be taken back to the XMB.
  5. Congratulations. Your PSP is now the same as mine, a full battle gear handheld. Place your 1.50 homebrews on the PSP/GAME150 folder.

Whew! That was long. I really enjoy writing these kind of stuff. If you have questions or comments, scroll down and leave your message. Thanks to the M33 team for the goodies especially to Dark Alex!

*Update: The screenshot plugin also works with this new custom Firmware!

  4. Lanz41 says:

i have psp1000 jap, is that ok with 4.01?
and new feature can i watch tv psp ?

  5. Kuchiki_Sakura says:

stylemo, do we need to disable the plugins before installing this?

  6. stylemo says:

@Kuchiki_Sakura: When I updated my PSP, I didn’t deactivate my plugins but it worked well. I think it’s the Custom XMB you have to deactivate first.

@Lanz41: Yeah you can install it on any PSP that has custom firmware installed already.

@rickyboy noob: I haven’t tried wifi yet. But I think if it should work, it would only install the firmware update without the Kernel add-on.

    @BossChief: Thanks!

    • steven says:

hi just wanted to ask…… is it okei if iupdate my psp with this coz my psp is:

      slim psp
3.90 33-3 so is it okay if i update it using your step A?

coz before i had a phat psp and it was 3.80 m33
and i updated it using another guide and at 99% is said FFFFFFFFFFF77 ERROR and then
      KABOOM!
      instant brick

  7. Kuchiki_Sakura says:

Stylemo, I have another question. Does the CXMB Plug-in still work and the POPS plug-in as well?

  8. Lanz41 says:

    Hi Stylemo
    my second question is
    update is work fine, thank’s
can i watch tv on psp 1000 ?

  9. stylemo says:

@Lanz41: With custom firmware installed on your PSP, you can watch recorded TV shows or streaming videos from your computer but I don’t think it’s possible at this moment to watch live TV shows from live antenna or cable.

  10. stylemo says:

@Kuchiki_Sakura: Yes the CXMB plugin works but you must use a newer version. About the POPS, I haven’t really tried that yet.

  11. pher0777 says:

thanks for the easy guide. question about the step 3
after update a, b what happen when i install c pls help

  12. Lanz41 says:

i’ve heard that official fw 3.9x has skype !!!
    what is that for ?
and is cfw 4.01 has skype or not or only for that slim psp?

    Thank’s, @Stylemo.

  13. stylemo says:

@pher0777: you can only perform step C if you have the fat PSP. Step C is the installation guide for installing the 1.50 Kernel Add-on. This enables you to run 1.5 based homebrew applications.

@Lanz41: 4.01 M33 has Skype of course. Skype is a phone program you can use with Wifi.

  14. pSp_newbie says:

any options for those without WiFi connection like me(seems like step A requires WiFi connection)?
    thanks

  15. Wolverine says:

    stylemo:

I really appreciate you and anyone else who contributed for taking the time to do this.

And a big thanks to Dark Alex!

  16. Sanondail says:

    just sharing:
    I heard popsloader 3.80 v2 DOES NOT WORK on 4.01 m33-2

  17. stylemo says:

@pSp_newbie: It would require a Wifi connection to download the 4.01 official update but since I included it on the installer pack, you don’t need to connect to any wifi hotspots anymore.

    @Wolverine: No problem.

@Sanondail: I’ll try to check into this one. ;)

  18. stylemo
i already upgrade my fw to 4.01 m33-2 through network and manually install & run addon 1.50 but every time im exiting game black screen appear and it goes off im using 8gb ms.
    pls help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. ShadowOps says:

Hey StyleMo, i have 3.52 m33-4 and i want to upgrade to 4.01 m33-2. When i run the update, i get this message “some of your idstorage keys have not the correct values, probably due to a downgrader. In order to continue, press x to restore the correct values, press r to exit”. I read online that people were getting bricked when they pressed X but that was when they were upgrading from 3.52 to 3.7 (their aren’t any discussions covering 3.52 to 4.01)…so i don’t know what to do. My motherboard says IC1003 and IC6001, so i think that a T082 motherboard. I pressed R and aborted the update so i could ask you before i do anything. Id appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks

  20. shane says:

heyz i have cfw 3.71 M33-2 will it still work?

  21. stylemo says:

@ShadowOps: My PSP is a TA-082 motherboard. When I was in 3.52 M33 and I tried to upgrade to 3.71 M33, I encountered that same question. I pressed X and everything worked smoothly. It was a risk that I took so I guess it’s also a risk you must take.

@shane: Of course it will. Please read the instructions very carefully.

  22. ShadowOps says:

so do you recommend upgrading to 3.71 and then to 4.01 or just go straight to 4.01

  23. ShadowOps says:

i tried to install the 3.71 firmware first and i got the same message, so this message is normal?

  24. ShadowOps says:

hey stylmo, here is what was said for someone with a similar problem
“I read that I need to use Keyclear and IDStorageManage but really am not sure what I am doing with those (dump, edit, correct the keys…). I’d appreciate any help!
people said since TA-082s don’t have the 6 or 7 keys, that it ended up bricking their PSPs if they didn’t fix the keys (besides for 5) and then create a 6 or 7.

You should always have key 6. If you’re missing key 7 and 8, do this:
    Run IdStorage Manager.
Create keys 7 and 8 if missing. They’ll now exist, but they’re completely blank.
    Dump the keys.
Use a PC to replace 0×0007.bin and 0×0008.bin from the dump with some good ones.
Run IDSM again and do verify/fix keys.”

Do i have to do all this before i install 4.01?

  25. stylemo says:

@ShadowOps: You should fix the ID storage keys.

  26. ShadowOps says:

do you have anything written on how to use idstorage manager?

  27. stylemo says:

@ShadowOps: no, i haven’t written anything about it. I fixed mine by pressing X when the installer asked me to. If you are really not sure about it then prepare a back-up Pandora in case of a brick. That’s how it works man.

  28. Zefrem23 says:

Is there any way to uninstall the 1.50 kernel addon once it’s installed? My 4.01 M33-2 PSP is now failing to go into sleep mode properly, and any game running when I put the PSP to sleep is crashed back to the XMB…. I think it might have something to do with the 1.50 kernel, but not 100% sure… any ideas?

  29. Oliver says:

I got this error. The game could not be started. While I was doing step. A What shall I doo?

  30. stylemo says:

@Zefrem23: I haven’t experienced that yet so I’m not sure why that happens to you. I think there is no uninstall option for 1.50 kernel but you could always reinstall 4.01 M33 using pandora.

@Oliver: Have you read the complete requirements?

  31. Oliver says:

Okay, but I already have 4.01 firmware how do I make it to an actual custom firmware?

  32. Sopanha says:

    Hey it just saids
    upacking done
    please wait…

how long do i have 2 wait

  33. Rhapsodos says:

    Nice tutorial! Thanks!

Have a question though. If I installed this but at some point, I want to return to my 3.90m33-3, how will I do that? Do I still need the Pandora because I don’t have one. Please answer. Thanks.

  34. Griever says:

Help stylemo! after upgrading my psp to 4.01m33-2 i tried to copy games iso into my psp mstick but i always get a “The Path is Too Deep” error. It never happened when i got 3.90m33-3 and older firmware.

  35. stylemo says:

@Griever: I’ve never heard or seen that error before. Try reformatting your Memory stick. I know it’s not a firmware issue.

  36. Griever says:

i already reformatted the mstick but that error remains for 1gb and above files

  37. Griever says:

Is the error due to the memstick problem? i got a fake memstick

@john: You sure you have a PSP with custom firmware installed?

@Lanz41: Change your region settings on the Recovery Menu.

@rhythm07: I haven’t encountered that error yet. Make sure you are running on 3.71 kernel.

  59. PSPGamer says:

What should I do if my PSP doesn’t have 3.60 M33 custom firmware? My PSP is a slim one by the way! Thanks in advance.

    awesome!

i did it step by step and it worked.

    thanks.

  61. PSPGamer says:

My PSP doesn’t have custom firmware but it has official firmware 3.95. Can I stiil install this CF v4.01 M33-2 ? Or do I have to install other lower version of CF first? Do I need Pandora battery. Sorry for all these questions and thank you in advance.

  62. em2x says:

    @pspgamer

you need a pandora to downgrade to 3.90m33-3 then you can upgrade to 4.01m33-2… gudluck bro!!!

  63. aten says:

hi, I have one question, in the steps you say something like

“It will take you to the Official Sony Update screen”

    and

    “The Sony Updater will run”

If this is all sony stuff, then will it not become OFW? How does using sony upader turn into m33?

  64. stylemo says:

@aten: Because that’s how it should work. Ever since 3.71 M33, Dark Alex has been using the SCE updater to do the update for him.

  65. aten says:

Yes, thanks, I did this update on my slim 3.71M33-2 and it worked like a charm! However, much to my disappointment, PS1 games no longer worked, so I had to google a lot and found something called “popsloader”, configured it and FINALLY they worked again.

Thanks for doing this stylemo, you’re the best.

  66. Jeffro says:

I’m getting the black screen then it says “Unpacking… done.” “Please wait…” And it just sits there. I’m running 3.52 M33-4 Any ideas?

    Same for me :S

  68. Mess says:

    What happened with yours man?

  69. Jeffro says:

Nothing.. lol It just sits there. I even just tried going to 3.90 first, but even that pack is doing the same thing.

  70. Mess says:

    ergh…
I was afraid, waited an hour or 2, and nothing… then restarted and then tried again…. nothing…

    :\

  71. Mess says:

Well i found our problem, i’ll show you how to solve it

  72. Mess says:

Pressing R button while starting PSP

Then “Configuration> “Game folder homebrew” > choose “currently (your installed firmware version here)”

    It worked for me!

  73. Jeffro says:

haha yep just found the same answer on a different forum was coming to put the same thing up. cheers man

  74. Mess says:

Heheh i found it by myself who would say.. :P
    cheers!!

  75. omg says:

hay ive successfully installed the firmware and the m33 but when i tried my games they all doesnt work anymore. an error keeps popping up saying that game cannot be started, help please? does not installing the 1.50 kernel has to do anything with it?

    any help

  80. iain says:

    found the solution omg
i had the same problem getting game could not start 80020321 you need a umd in the drive and the games will work ok
    hope this helps

  81. stylemo says:

@iain: I’m glad you finally found the solution to your problem. Some games need a UMD in the drive to run. But some doesn’t require any, you just have to adjust the settings to the right driver. :)

  82. smalltimore says:

thanks for all your work on this, stylemo. your guides are the easiest to follow i have seen!

i’m on 2.60 on a phat psp (old school, i know) and have been using fanjita’s eboot loader to run homebrew forever. i finally have a game i think is worth updating for so i’m going to dive in.

here is what I plan to do based on my reading here and elsewhere. Please comment on if I am missing anything or if there are better ways to do certain parts.

    1. I will first want to upgrade from 2.60 ofw to 2.80 ofw in order to run the downgrader i found on psp-hacks (if you know of a great downgrader, let me know).
    2. I will then downgrade to 1.50.
    3. I will then install 352-m33-4 as your older installer can go from 1.5 to 3.52
    4. From 3.52, I can then install 4.01 M33-2 with your installer (along with the 1.50 add-on).
    5. I should be good to go, and have the ability to create a magic mem stick and pandora battery.

or, at step 4, I could go ahead and create the magic stick and pandora battery from 3.52 using DC v7 and install 4.01 m33-2 from there. Not sure what is the better option.

So, what do you think? Am I missing something? thanks for your time!

  83. iain says:

    stylemo
how do you adjust the driver settings?
    thanks

  84. stylemo says:

@smalltimore: You are absolutely right about the steps you have written. You can create Pandora while you’re in 1.50 so that you could get straight to 4.01 M33-2. But if you don’t have a spare battery to create into Pandora, you could just follow the steps you have written. Both works.

@iain: You can access the driver menu via recovery mode or by simply pressing home to bring out the VSH menu. You can then toggle the driver settings.

  85. smalltimore says:

    thanks, stylemo!

what would be the best way to create pandora straight from 1.5? i like this approach as then i will have the tool in case the update to 4.01 goes fubar. can i use your installer to straight from 1.5 to 4.01, or do i need to get to 3.52 first?

  86. iain says:

    cheers stylemo
    got it sorted now
    your the man!!!!!!!

  87. smalltimore says:

wow, thanks again! i’m on 4.01 m33-2 all the way from lowly 2.6! nice. all of my brew is working (unh, PSPSeq) AND I can play God of War. w00ts all around.

  89. amnesia06 says:

    any help m8?
i put them in the 4.xx folder and same message so i created a GAME150 folde and put em in there and same

  93. stylemo says:

@iain: You must have a UMD on your drive. But you could also do it without UMD. Simply access the VSH menu and change the UMD driver settings. :)

  94. bro. agited ka man ti instructions nu kasatnu ag dload ti games ti psp ken anya ti papanan nga sites. please nagngina ti games d2y. hehehehe cool sites dude.

  95. Galatea says:

Thanx for the tutorial an all,I managed to put the cfw on my PSP but when I try to run the update it says it can’t be played on this psp….And please don’t ask me if I did everything right,I’m not that stupid,I know how to copy and paste a folder….so if anyone has any solution I would highly appreciate it(I don’t have any other cfw instaled and my psp version is 3.95,I bought it 2 days ago…)

  96. stylemo says:

@Galatea: you need to have a previous installation on your PSP. 3.95 doesn’t make it.

Is there a way to get this custom firmware onto a PSP Slim running Sony’s 4.01 firmware? I read that since my firmware is ABOVE 3.51, I can’t downgrade it. Please email me at wrxdrifter2005@gmail.com

  110. ABHISHEK says:

  112. Rickard says:

Hi, I asked a question in the forum on “How to Install 3.52 M33-4 on Your PSP” but it seems to be dead in there, So sry for asking it in here.

I got a psp phat with 2.71 SE-C firmware, and want to update it to 3.52 M33-4 and then to 4.01 M33-2.
    Since I got 2.71 SE-C I guess I can skip to step 2. Am i right ?

It says that I should copy the M33CREATOR folder to my “ms0:/PSP/GAME150″ (for SE/OE Firmwares)
my only problem is that there is no GAME150 folder, I have a folder called GAME thou
can I copy the files there and go on from there ?
    help appreciated.
    Thx!

  113. stylemo says:

@Rickard: Yes you can skip to step 2. Create a GAME150 folder if you don’t have one.

  114. Rickard says:

Ok, went for it before you had time to answer :/
Just got my psp a few days ago, so im 100 percent noob, but everything worked like a charm.
Thx a million for the great guide!
    piz!

  115. jimmy says:

u r a legend worked perfectly, keep up the good work :)

  116. Jawo241 says:

if upgrade my psp fat to CFW 4.01m33 can i change it back to 3.71m33-2 again?

  117. stylemo says:

    @Jawo241: Yes sir.

  118. dethmoose669 says:

Can this be done on OFW?

  119. stylemo says:

@dethmoose669: Yes, but you have to install custom firmware on it first.

  120. Jake says:

I also can’t finish step C, same problem with abhishek, incorrect or inexisting 150.pbh at root

nice guide btw, everything worked out fine except step C

  121. stylemo says:

@Jake: If that’s a slim PSP you are installing it won’t work. 1.50 Kernel Add ons are for Phat PSPs only.

  122. Jake says:

mine is the phat one… any suggestions? When you said the root directory, you mean the MPRoot right?

  123. stylemo says:

@Jake: I meant at the root of your memory stick drive. For example if your memory stick drive appears on Drive F:\, the 1.50.PBP file must be located here: F:\150.PBP. Get it?

  124. Jake says:

yes thanks, I got it lol. It’s my first time so… thanks again:P

I didn’t notice this before but now that I am playing Star Ocean: First Departure, Wild ARMs XF and even the first Valhalla Knights game, my PSP hangs. I’m using 4.01 m33-2 and it wasn’t hanging before (even when exiting the game via the HOME button) but started hanging when I played WA XF and installed cwcheat. I disabled the plugins but it still hangs when I’m playing SO: FD. My question is that will this be fixed when I upgrade to 5.01 m33-3 or do I have to reformat my MS? Thanks in advance
