How to Add 1.50 Kernel Add-on to 3.71 M33 Custom Firmware
I know this post is a little bit late. It’s more than late, probably, but there are still a lot of guys asking me to make this tutorial. I’ve been very busy the past few days that’s why I haven’t been updating too much. But because you guys asked for it, I’ll give it to you. Well, here you go. This is the ultimate guide on how to add the 1.50 kernel add-on for your 3.71 M33 or higher.
REQUIREMENTS
Be sure you meet all the requirements before attempting to do this process.
- A PSP Fat (No it does not work with a SLIM) with 3.71 M33, 3.71 M33-2 or 3.71 M33-3
- Make sure you have the GAME folder configured to 3.71 or the program won’t start. How? Enter the recovery mode and go to Configuration -> Game folder homebrew. It should read Currently 3.71 Kernel
- A USB that will connect your PSP to your PC
- A keen and watchful eye and a brain that will help you follow and read the instructions very carefully
If you meet all those requirements then you are good to go.
INSTALLATION GUIDE
- Get the 1.50 Kernel Addon on the QJ download site. Once on the page, scroll down a bit, and you’ll see an orange button that is labeled “Download”. Click that button and save the file to your computer.
- Extract the file and you will see and UPDATE folder. Connect your Fat PSP to your PC with a USB cable. Copy and paste the UPDATE folder from your computer to your PSP ms0://PSP/GAME/
- Download the 1.50 Firmware here. Connect your PSP to your PC and copy the 150.PBP you’ve just downloaded into the ROOT of the memory stick.
- Disconnect your Fat PSP and on the XMB menu, go to GAME > MEMORY STICK and you’ll find the 1.50-2 update. Run the update and press X to agree with the installation. After the installation, the program will auto-exit.
- Done! You can now install homebrew applications. Visit this post for a list of 1.50 homebrew apps and learn how to install them.
Now, wasn’t that too easy. Remember, before asking for help on the comments, please read this post very carefully. Make sure you meet the requirements and make sure you follow the guide step by step. Thank you and if you have more requests about the PSP just leave them on the comments are.

I don’t think it was really necessary to make a tutorial for this lol, it was pretty straightforward when you explained what happened before.

this is nice but its better if u have de UPMS ( Ultimate Pandora Memory Stick ) cso file to make your stick multi bootable and the you can use the option (from HELLCAT) of rebooting to the full 1.50 firmware while u use those 1.50 apps and games and all it takes is to rebbot your psp to go back to your day to day firmware (3.40 OEA,3.52 M33-4,3.71 M33-4 or and HX-1) which ever is the one you’re using. http://z3.invisionfree.com/PSP_Maxconsole_UPMS/index.php? is where this file is, it comes in to version full as a cso file and a lite as an eboot file, you have to register but its easy and very well worth it !!! Stylemo thanks for the tutorial i like the one for the IPOD touch a lot, if u have more stuff on it let us know. Later …..

December 20th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
@advancedude : yeah but i think i have to make this guide for newbies.
@lo : yeah sure of course. You can delete the 150.pbp file after installing the 1.50 kernel add-on.

Always nice. I remember when I was looking for such step by step manuals. Now I just dive head on first, but heeyyyy you see how that sometimes goes XD
December 28th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
I tried the instructions above and when I run the update it says Incorrect or inexistent 150.pbp at root. What should I do?
I pasted the 150.pbp file at the MS_ROOT folder, is it the same as the root folder?

by the way im currently using 3.71 m33-4 psp Phat
December 29th, 2007 at 2:43 am
@BossChief: maybe the 150.PBP file you downloaded is corrupt. If you think you’ve downloaded the correct file then make sure you have it placed on the root or the outer most directory of your memory stick. For example if you memory stick’s drive is F: then the file should be located in F:/150.PBP

Thanks for the guide!
One thing I don’t get though, is the root of the memory stick on a different drive than the PSP itself? Where exactly do I put it…
February 2nd, 2008 at 12:28 am
@Jimbo: if for example I connect my PSP to my PC. My PC detects my PSP as drive E: That is the root of the memory stick. It’s the root of the drive. And inside drive E there are folders like PSP, VIDEO and MUSIC. Those are second level folders. So basically, the root of the memory stick means the root of the drive. Or simply, it’s the drives outermost or first level.
I hope I have explained it well.

OH and do i need to install 1.50 kernel add-on so that i may be able to run PSX games (EBOOT.PBP). Currently at 3.71 m33-2
May 23rd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Hi, i have a phat PSP currently running 3.71 m33-2 and i tried installing the 1.50 kernel add-on. i downloaded the kernel thing and put the “UPDATE” folder into :psp\game\ and put the 150.PBP file at the root of my memory stick, but when i go to GAME then memory stick in my XMB it just has 2 corrupt files and one file that is nameless, this nameless one is just a black screen when u press x or start on it :S.
any suggestions?
May 24th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
@Damir: I think you need to set the correct Kernel in the recovery menu.
June 8th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
hey, can i remove the 1.50 kernel add on? will it affect my psp’s performance?
June 8th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
@kevindolores: why in the first place would you want to remove the 1.50 kernel add-on? The 1.50 Kernel is a great feature that the PSP Slim doesn’t have. It enables you to run homebrew programs that makes your PSP one of the greatest devices on earth. The presence of it on your firmware doesn’t really affect the PSPs performance. But if you insist and you want to remove it, try accessing the flash0 drive of your PSP and remove the 1.50 prxs.

October 10th, 2008 at 2:40 am
@TI: Yes it works with 3.71 M33-4 but only on a Phat PSP.
