Install 3.71 M33 on Your PSP in 4 Easy Steps
This post may be a bit late but I know a lot of you PSP owners out there are looking for installation guide for the 3.71 M33. For a bit of information, 3.71 M33 was created by Dark Alex. In other words, M33 is Dark Alex. Now on to the instructional guide!
Requirements
- You must have 3.52 M33-4 installed on your PSP. If you don’t have one yet, lucky for you I wrote a guide on installing 3.52 M33-4 too.
- A Slim (PSP2000) or Fat PSP (The older version) with 78% or more battery.
- PSP AC adaptor
- A USB Cable
- A Computer
- Ability to understand and follow instructions
- If you have the fat PSP, configure GAME folder to run on 3.52. How? Shutdown your PSP. Then power on your PSP while holding down your R button. This will take you to the recovery menu. Go to Configuration > Game folder homebrew and check if 3.52 is enabled. Press X or circle if not. Exit the recovery menu.
That’s it. if you have all these then you are ready to go!
Now here are the 4 very easy steps:
- Download the 3.71 M33 installer pack I’ve made just for you. Unzip the file to anywhere on your computer.
- Connect your PSP to your computer via USB and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME
- Go to your XMB menu and run the M33 update program. The screen will go black and this is normal. Follow the instructions. Be sure you have your PSP plugged-in to the AC adaptor. Screen will change to the Sony Update screen. Accept and update.
- This last instruction is VERY important. After the update is finished, the updater will ask you to reboot by pressing X or O. Do so, press X or O and the PSP will restart. Have fun on your new upgraded PSP!
After successfully upgrading your PSP to 3.71 M33, you can install the 3.71 M33-2 update by following the guide I made here. Special credits go to Dark Alex. You can send him donations on his website via PayPal.

3.71 M33 supports the latest games and it has a theme changer on the XMB menu. You can also view the photos while listening to music simultaneously. The video has also added options like search by time interval.
It still supports backup ISO games and of course you could still play and execute homebrew using Noobz eloader.

Ok, I just did the 3.52 m33-4 update, and when I go to use this one it sais “This program requires 3.52 m33-3 or higher.”
What did I do wrong? System information sais I’m at 3.52 m33-4.

Scratch that last comment, I skipped right to the steps of doing it. Didn’t do this part.

Hi slitz:
Try placing a UMD on your PSP drive. If it doesn’t work press Select button while on the XMB menu to bring out the VSH menu. Try changeing the UMD ISO settings.

@Kappukappu: Have you tried placing it on the ISO folder on the root of your memory stick?
Try going to the recovery menu and changing the GAME folder kernel to 3.71. If you have plugins enabled, try to disable them first.
I never experienced that problem before.

Ok, I have ran the 3.71 M33 updater many times (checking and double checking that my kernel is set to 3.52) and I still get the error that a couple other people got: “this program requires 3.52 m33-3 or higher”. I am completely lost as to how this is happening. I have to say that I am a Homebrew first timer, just got my self a Pandora’s battery kit and downgraded from 3.71 ofw. Then I upgraded from 1.5 to 3.52 M33-4 (thanks to the handy guide on here) and am now attempting the 3.71 M33 update. PLEASE help me! Than you!!

Try this:
Connect PSP to PC then go in to recovery mode, advanced, toggle flash1, then delete the config.se file.

i’ve upgraded to m33 3.52-4, and trying to upgrade to m33 3.71, but it keeps on bricking. it seems like the instructions are pretty clear, i have a FAT psp, @ M33 3.52-4, GAME folder running at 3.52, copied the UPDATE folder to PSP/GAME. ran it and it gives me an error at 99%, and this has already happened three times.
i figured if i can follow the much harder instructions to unbrick my PSP, i can do this, what’s happening? help! thanks.

guys i found something tt works!!
Make sure the title of the ISO/CSO is short.
Example:
Correct — Fifa07.iso
Not Correct — FIFA-07-[PSP][EUR][www.torrent site.com].iso
——————————————————————-
Now right click on the ISO/CSO file and choose Properties. Make sure the Read Only and Hidden box is unchecked and the Archive Box is checked.
——————————————————————-
Go into recovery mode (Hold R shoulder button down while turning on PSP)
Now go to configuration then to UMD MODE and keep pressing X till you see Sony NP9660 NO UMD.
When it is set to the above setting go to BACK and press X.
Now go to ADVANCED and press X.
Go to ADVANCED CONFIGURATION and press X.
Make sure all the settings here are disabled.
Now EXIT out of recovery.
Now try the ISO/CSO.

I am just going to try to re-downgrade with the pandora battery and then start over. if it works then maybe it was just a bad install?? the only thing i did between the two upgrades from 3.52 M33-4 to 3.71 M33 pop in a memory stick that had game iso’s on it just to see if they ran, and they didn’t. so then i continued on to to the 3.71 M33 update. I will post if I get it completed.

looks like i was so excited to get 3.52 M33-4 on my ofw PSP that i skipped a couple of steps at the end of the update. If others are having this problem just follow the last steps all the way through before you jump for joy! I now have a 3.71 M33 PSP. I sure do love pandoras battery. Hello all, I am getting ready to go to Iraq and I just purchased a PsP to keep my sanity, I have had it just long enough to figure out how to load music and pics on it and how to update the system, it is currently sitting at 3.72 sony update, but in my adventures i discovered ou can download games in .cso and iso format, but I can not figure out what to do from there, and I am still reading, I know the answer prolly pretty simple but I could really use some high speed expert advice on how to tweak this and make it to where I can down load my games and movies so I don’t have to ruin umds with all the sand and stuff and keep my sanity please.

nice guide man, i am going to try it but the download for the 3.71 M33 installer pack says “Invalid Quickkey. This error has been forwarded to MediaFire’s development team.”
I heard the normal 3.71M33 was buggy and stuff, try upgrading it to 3.71M33-2 it should work. Where is the 1.50v2 kernal addon? is it in the installation?

Do I also need to install 3.52 M33-4 on my new slim before able to upgrade to 3.71 M33?
I just bought the original slim set recently.
Do I follow the steps accordingly? From 3.52 M33-4 to 3.71 M33 then to 3.71 M33-2. Or can I install 3.71 M33-2 straight.
If ever one day, I decided to remove the firmware upgrade, is it possible to roll back to the original firmware when I bought it?

@Jumi, you say you have 3.10 firmware. You can’t upgrade to 3.71 M33. You have to downgrade to 1.5 first. Be careful with tinkering your PSPs because I won’t be held responsible if something happens to your device.
@Anup: Make sure your isos are named properly. The filenames should not exceed 50 characters. Or try resetting your device.

@babu - you can actually play games from your memory card. you can play PSP demo games if you want. or you can just buy UMDs for your PSP. If you meant playing backup games, you should first downgrade that PSP using Pandora’s battery or let someone with xperience downgrade it for you.

Unable to upgrade from 3.51M33-1
Grateful for some help/advice/links for the problem I seem to have…
Have been using Devhook to give me firmware 3.11, but needed to upgrade further so used M33Creator to get to 3.51M33-1. However I now need to upgrade further and want to go to 3.71.
This is where my problem begins. I have downloaded the correct software and boot files and followed the instructions exactly (just like I did to get to 3.51) for 3.52M33 (as I undertsand to get to 3.71 I require to be at 3.52M33-3 (or 4)) however when I run the M33Creator I get the following error “3.52 PSAR size doesn’t match”. Have tried different versions of 3.52creator and 3.52 BOOT. Have also formatted MS (1GB) and used another MS (1GB) which still did not resolve the problem.
What I would like to know is :-
a) how can I upgrade to 3.71 - what am I doing wrong ?
b) If somehow I can’t upgrade further because of a problem, how can I return to 1.50 so that I can then upgrade to 3.71 - hopefully with instructions.
c) Are there any other options that I could do without “bricking” my PSP ?

@jtj43: If you have 3.51 M33-1, I think you may have to install the updates first. I mean update it to 3.51 m33-7.
After that, you can now install 3.52 M33 following my guide.
And If somehow that doesn’t work, you can get return to 1.50 by using the recovery mmode. You can get to it by shutting down your PSP and restarting it while holding the R button.

Tinkering with your PSP is a very delicate process man and you should know that. Stylemo wrote a very good and easy to follow guide so guys who are new to all the hacking thing can easily do the process.
Hey maybe you should try the recovery mode. Turn off your PSP. Be sure that the green power light is off. Then turn it on while pressing the R button. If you are successful you can recover it.
The cause of most of these problems are faulty memory sticks. You guys should know that. Format your Memory Stick before doing the process to be sure.

do i need to have the memory card formated with only this update on the memory stick?
reason why. it just reboots and plays my umd game disk when trying to do the update.

Hi, I cant start my recovery menu, nothing happens when I press R when starting the psp. Could the psp brick if I dont have the right “kernel” set?

i faced this problem like boom:some of your idstorage keys have not the correct values, probably due to a downgrader. In order to continue, press X to restore the correct values, press R to exit.i was scared to press X coz i dont want my PSP to get bricked what do i do now?

@Jurvis: It’s your choice dude. Press X or exit the installation. It’s like choosing between the red pill and the blue pill and finding out how deep the rabbit hole goes. Well, it’s up to you. It’s your own risk dude.
I’m a risk taker so if you ask me, go ahead and press X.

just upgraded with your 3.52 M33-4 guide works fine .now i wan’t to upgrade to 3.71 M33 but the M33 recovery menu won’t load it just goes to the reg. menu. it worked at the end of the end of the last guide. but now it won’t. What am i doing wrong? i am holding the Right Trigger button and turning on the switch. HELP!!!

@Jurvis: You can always downgrade again. Stop tinkering with your PSPs if you don’t know what you are doing.
@Zantra: The recovery menu should work. Shutdown fully your PSP and try it again.
