How to Install 3.52 M33-4 on Your PSP
As I promised Fat Of The Land and a lot more other people around the net, I’ll be writing a guide on the installation of 3.52 M33-4 custom firmware for the PSP. If you’re wondering what in the world 3.52 M33-4 is, it’s a custom firmware built by russian hackers that enables you to play homebrew and also enjoy the features of the official 3.52 sony firmware.
Before we begin with the process, here are a few simple things to do first.
Check your existing PSP Firmware.
On your XMB (Cross Media Bar), go to Settings > System Settings > System Information. Press circle or x (it depends on what PSP version you have) to view your existing firmware. If you have a 1.5 or any custom OE/SE firmware, you are in luck. You can proceed to the next step, otherwise, you must downgrade your PSP first. I suggest you use Pandora’s battery for the downgrade.
Obtain a USB Cable
If you don’t know what a USB cable is, I assure you won’t be successful with the installation. A USB cable is a connectivity tool between your PC/Mac and PSP.
Download the 3.52 M33-4 Installer Package
I packed all the files into a RAR file so you won’t have any trouble locating the files around the net. After downloading the file, unpack it using WinRAR. I’ve separated each step into separate folders so everything will be organized.
Download the 3.52 M33-4 installer pack.
Check Your Battery
I suggest you must have more than 75% battery to avoid bricking. And also plugin the adaptor.
If you have correctly followed the few simple steps above, then we are ready to go on to the installation process.
Warning: I have succesedfully installed 3.52 M33 on 3 PSPs already but there is a slight chance of bricking your PSP, only if you won’t follow the instructions step by step. Don’t worry if you brick your PSP, you can always use Pandora’s battery.
3.52 M33-4 Installation Procedures
- If you have are running on an OE or SE custom firmware, SKIP this step and proceed to STEP 2. Connect your PSP to your computer. Open the STEP 1 folder and copy kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folders to ms0:/PSP/GAME/. Disconnect your PSP from your computer and then on the XMB go to GAME > Memory Stick > KXploit Permanent Patcher. Run it. Once done, delete the kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folder from your ms0:/PSP/GAME/ folder. Proceed to next step.
- Connect your PSP to your computer. Open STEP 2 folder then copy the M33CREATOR folder to your “ms0:/PSP/GAME” (for 1.50 Firmwares) or “ms0:/PSP/GAME150″ (for SE/OE Firmwares). Disconnect your PSP from your computer then on the XMB menu go to GAMES > Memory Stick and execute 3.52 M33 CREATOR. For noobs, the screen will normally go black so don’t panic. Once the process is finished it will automatically go back to the XMB.On your XMB, go again to GAMES > Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute 3.52 M33UPDATE. You’ll have to press X at your own risk to agree to the installation. Don’t you turn off your PSP until the process is complete or you’ll end up bricking it. When finished, you’ll have to press X again and reboot your PSP manually. Reboot by turning of your PSP and then turning it on again.You’ll then have a 3.52 M33 PSP. You can now delete the M33CREATOR folder form your “ms0:/PSP/GAME” folder on your PSP.
- Open STEP 3 folder and then copy M33Update4 folder to mso:/PSP/GAME150. On your XMB menu go to GAMES > Memory Stick then execute the update. After the update you will be back on the XMB and you now have 3.52 M33-4 PSP. Delete the M33Update4 folder from mso:/PSP/GAME150. From the STEP 3 folder, copy the seplugins folder to the root of your memory stick.
- Turn off your PSP then turn it on again while pressing the R button. This will take you to the recovery menu. Go to Plugins and enable popsloader by pressing x. After enabling it, go to back and then exit.
- Enjoy your PSP 3.52 M33-4!
You have PSP 3.52 M33-4, now what? Get those cool homebrew apps! You can either stick with this firmware for some time or upgrade it to 3.71 M33. I had mine installed with 3.71 M33 already and I say it’s really cool. There are new features like changing themes from XMB and a new kind of Video search.

hi karan. don’t even try to install 3.52 on your PSP is you don’t understand the instructions. Not everything is spoonfed you know.
this is a great guide. i saw this on google, easy to access. props to guide maker and the m33 peeps. i think i’ll donate.
You know, while I was waiting for the new file to be uploaded I just did it myself. And you don’t need to install ALL the version to get up to M33-4, you only need to install 3.52 M33 and then upgrade to M33-4…so I don’t know why you posted all the extra unnecessary steps, stylemo.
So, I’m just letting everyone know if they skip steps 3 and 4, they’ll be fine.

Just one thing still missing on this Custom Firmware is LocationFree Player.
The icon is there but nothing happens when trying to open.
So unfortunately I now need to go back to 3.03OE to use it.
I’ll have to email the creator of this CF to get this fixed.

Why are you trying to upgrade to M33-2? Are you not going all the way to M33-4? If you are going to M33-4 just install the M33-4 update…not the M33-2 and M33-3 update…you’re just wasting your time…but your choice.
I have PSP 3.52 version and I try to install 3.52 M33-4 update. When I start the 1st step , “The game could not be started (80020148)”.

You need to have a homebrew enabled PSP which means you need a PSP with a 1.5 firmware or any of the custom firmwares. I think you need to downgrade your PSP first before trying this one. Please search Google about PSP homebrew first before trying anything else. Thanks.

i have firmware 1.5 and i did watever u said on the tut. but i had an error… *i had 3.52m33 but downgraded to 1.5 and did wat u said on the tut but still wont work
If you have 1.5, you have to run step 1. It fixes the ID storage keys.

I got 3.03 Oe-c on my psp (thats what my psp tells me)
But when i go on my psp i see a map iso and a map psp.
When i go in psp there are some maps and 1 maps name is game but not game150 :S do i need to downgrade it or can i just so this tut ?

Yannick: Check if you are running 1.50 kernel on your GAME folder by going to the recovery menu. Now how do we do that? First, shutdown your PSP and then turn it on again while pressing R button. It will then take you to the recovery menu. Got to the configuration > Game Folder Homebrew and check if it’s 3.03. If it’s not, change it to 3.03 then exit the recovery menu.
After that begin with Step 2.

If your GAME folder is running on 3.03 then create a folder named GAME150 then there you put the M33Creator.

1. i cannot play fifa 08. after intro, screen turn black, what is the problem? i’ve set my xmb speed to 133, iso/umd to 222 and still not working. Why?

Are you using 4 Gig mem sticks? I’ve encountered this one already and I switched to 1Gig mem sticks and it worked.

Howdy folks, just need a little help here. Like most of us i want to be able to download and play games on my psp so I did a bit of reading and a website said I needed Firmware 3.52 or higher, so I upgraded to that except now it still won’t work, found out i had to install a CFW so i went and got m33’s 3.52 but it’s not installing. Any help?

Im afraid to do step one. i copied the kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folders to ms0:/PSP/GAME/. when i go to the game menu i see the kexploit permanent patcher but under it there is file wich is corrupted should i proceed? i downgraded to 1.50 yesterday from 2.71 and im on a TA-082 motherboard if that helps. Yes this is my first time installing custom firmware.
dont worry about it i have a ta-082 and it works awesomely
and i only got into the homebrew scene a few days ago!
oh and just some info, once you downgrade a ta-082 to 1.50 it acts like any other psp so you can run every home brew app easily
p.s corrupted data is the stuff that makes homebrew work so once you do the hack you can go into recovery mode and hide all the corrupt icons.
Errr…after completing step 2 of this guide
i umm formated my memory stick( didnt know what the hell i was thinking…) so whe i proceed to step 3 where it says “Open STEP 3 folder and then copy M33Update4 folder to mso:/PSP/GAME150. there is no GAME150 folder so i decided to make one. When i go to games nothing shows…should i copy the M33Update4 folder to mso:/PSP/GAME and try and run the update?

I want to upgrade from 3.40 version to 3.52 M33-4. I have followed the steps but along the way an error appears indicating that the game cannot be loaded (error 8002— something). I am trying to downgrade to version 1.50 but seems there are no available downgrade installer.

Hey Michael, do you have a UMD on your drive? Also you can press select button while on the XMB menu to bring up the VSH menu. You can then change your UMD ISO settings.

Hi, I am a total N00b when it comes to modding PSP’s, and I have this problem: I have installed the 3.52 m33 firmware update sucessfully, but when I try to update it to 3.52 m33-4, I get a “GAME NOT FOUND” error, I also don’t seem to have a /GAME150 directory, can anyone help please?

please tell me where exactly is the “root” of my memory stick. is it the mproot folder or in one of the two folders inside that folder? seplugins doesn’t show up anywhere i put it. also when i try to intall the 1.5 kernel it says it can’t find it. i’m on 3.71 m33-2

@sama_gill: There are several ways actually.
1. Upgrade to 3.03 and downgrade using the Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories Unpatched UMD.
2. Upgrade to 3.50 and downgrade using Lumines UMD.
3. Use pandora’s battery.

maybe you deleted the folder “GAME” in the PSP folder. Just make another folder named GAME150 and put m33creator there and just leave the GAME folder.
Hi i want to try NBA LIVE 08, my last upgrade was when i made my psp version 1.5 and it did not run. i remember those days when psp v 1.5 sold for a premium. =) anyway tried upgrading to 3.52 M33 and succeeded. I can now play LIVE 08, question is do i need M33-04? Benefits? When i transfered the update to my stick, there is a screen with 3:33 numbers and i am assuming this is the M4 update to run? I followed till Step 3, but when we ran the 3.52-4 Update, it said it updated successfully, yet when we tried to turn it on, it was stuck on the UMD menu/Saved Data Menu and all the buttons doesnt work anymore. We can still go into recovery menu though. We deleted the 3.52 M33 Creator from the psp already.
What do we do now?

Hey, don’t know if you are still reading these or not, but is it completely necessary to install/run the popsloader? If I just want 3.52 M33-4, but am not interested in running PSX/PS1 games, do I still need to install/run popsloader?
@Mill: it’s entirely optional. You don’t need to install it if you don’t want to.

Those having problems of game not found, simply go to recovery mode, plug in your usb and psp then delete the registry folder and config.se. Voila your games run!!!
how long does it take for the black screen to become xmb again in step 2
Hey I have a very strange problem. I can not access Recovery console in any way. Everything during the patching went fine I got no errors. Also the firmware just shows up as 3.52 M33-4 and PSX Games work fine I can load them without problem. Also original UMD games work fine. But I can’t access that recovery menu holding R button while turning the PSP on. Any way to fix this? Or what I am doing wrong ?
Hmmmm weird I got it to work now. I just have to hold the power button up while holding R button. Then it worked.

You need a UMD in order to play most of the games but you can tinker with the UMD ISO MODE settings by pressing the HOME button while on XMB to display the VSH menu.
To all people having trouble with their ISOs, try reformattng your memory stick or resetting the device. Most of your questions are answered in the comments you just have to scroll through it. Thanks.

hey Max, that’s not supposed to happen. What was your last firmware you upgraded from. if ever you bricked your PSP, you can always use pandora’s battery to revive your device.

I had Dark Alex’s 3.10 OE-A and I fresh formated 1 GB MS Sony Pro Duo before this. maybe that caused a delay. Anyways, thank you stvlemo for trying to help.

Do I really need POPSLOADER to play PSX games. Because I had only to upgrade to 3.10 OE-A and I would put PSX game’s EBOOTS in ISO folder where I put PSP games and everything would work just fine. So do I really need popsloader now?
Hi. I don’t know if this has ANYTHING to do with this, but i have a problem. I updated my PSP successfully to 3.51 M33 with my 1GB Memory Stick, but after i updated, my memory stick was still in and the PSP couldn’t read it. The memory stick light just kept blinking nonstop. I took it out and placed it in again and again. It still couldn’t read it. I’m wondering if you know what the problem is ’cause I’m planning on getting a new memory stick. A 4GB. Plz help.

Hi – I’m having the same issue as Jason and a few others on here as follows:
Loading 1.50 firmware … OK
Writing 1.50 firmware … OK
Loading 3.52 firmware … OK
Writing 3.52 firmware …
It’s been 30 minutes. According to Jason after a few hours it processed.
Like you said, just push the directional pad and it will refresh itself… however still not processed.
I’ve always had the original 1.50 version since I owned this PSP. I have a few custom emulators downloaded on my memory stick and some MP3 files, but that’s it.
I wonder what my issue is? I’ll let it sit for awhile then come back and see what happens.
If anyone can provide some insight, that would be greatly appreciated.

Josh: You just have to wait, mine took lore than 20mins, im not sure if you can turn your PSP off but after than process when I try to update my PSP the gameboot showed up but then I waited for more than an hour and still nothing happens then I took the risk and turn my PSP off and boot it again. And guess what it did not brick and I did that twice before I finally successfully updated my PSP

Josh: The first process really took a long time “the writing 3.52 something” so just wait for a while cause I’m not sure if you can turn off your PSP if it really took uber long. After that process you will have to select the firmware update from your game menu-memory stick and then it will run the update. the psp logo will appear and it should just take you a couple of minutes. But if you encounter the psp logo not dissapearing for a really long time then i suggest you shut off your PSP and try again
Ok I think its safe to say that I need some help I got my CFW 3.52 M33 set up pretty good, not sure if this show any signs or a error with in my PSP, but like when I try to disconect the psp from my computer psp reads please wait and never restarts, another one is I was able to switch my usb to umd disc saved it on my desktop and put it in my ISO folder, when trying to start my ISO game I would just get a black screen and after messing around a bit on it and made some changes in config. it now reads “The game could not be started (80020148), Ive been trying to read as much about to get it done right, but just thought Id ask for some help. Thank you in advance.

Im thinking its somewhere in my configuration and Ive followed the configurations as posted on here before but maybe possibly in the advanced/advanced configuration should both plain modules in umd/iso and execute BOOT.BIN in umd/iso be ENABLED, or is it the flash, Im still kind of new to this and know that this part is a bit fragile, or what should I have my CPU speed at. another thing Ive noticed is that in my plugins I have 3 popsloader.prx [POPS] Im ganna try having only one enabled and the other two disabled.

Ok heres another question, following up to my previous question. (Im able to switch my usb to a umd disc and copy past it to my desktop then drag it back to my memory stick, and when I open it threw the psp it looks and reads it as a game not as corrupt data so I think its good to go but when I try to play it I still get the “The game could not be started (80020148)”, but since I have a software that opens iso files it also get the game from that software, so is it possible that thats the reason its not work,because the way the game was retrive in the first place? oh and the software for the ISO is powerISO. any help will be greatly appreciated. @burner: You should try another memory stick. Memory sticks with 2Gig and below capacities work best. Format your Memory stick just to be sure.
@boom: Try accessing the recovery mode. If you can’t access it, there’s Pandora battery to do the trick.

Have followed instructions but got stuck half way. Have a 1.50 and followed above steps to make it a 3.52 M33 but am not able to make it m33-4. Copied the update and when I try to run it says “game could not be started”

Burner, thanks a lot, running 3.71 M33 now. One more question if you can help. Having trouble playing recent cso/iso files. Fifa 2008 for example, have tried iso and cso file but it just doesnt show. all the old ones like fifa 07 still work. What am i missing here?

Hey.. I followed the steps and now have 3.52 M33. This is great but im having trouble updating to m33-4. Ive tried the steps but when i run the update 4 it restarts then says game error (as others have reported). One thing ive noticed all along is that ive never had game150 folder, only game. Please help.

@James 25: it’s not true that many isos or csos won’t work on 3.71 M33. Well in fact there are more supported games by this firmware. Those issues can be solved by upgrading with a formatted memory stick and following the instructions correctly. Some isos won’t work if they have filenemes longer than 50 characters.
It’s really your choice if you want to upgrade. I’m just here to guide you but it’s still your choice.

@help me: first you have to format your memory stick first on your PSP. Then after doing so, open your memory stick on your computer and place your isos or csos inside the ISO folder.

@HELP NEEDED AGAIN: Dude, why did you use the easy installer? If you say you were running from 2.71 SE then you really don’t need a downgrader or anything. All you need is the 1.50 firmware. Use the recovery mode to downgrade. It’s that easy. You may have bricked your PSP now. Again, you must always research before you do anything on your PSP. Regrets always comes at the end.
how do you know when its for sure bricked? I still can play that UMD Pro Evolution game on the disc.
It’s not bricked then. A PSP is bricked when you can’t start or open it even with the green light on. If you want me to help you, you can give me your Yahoo Messenger handle so wh could just chat.

3. When you already have a 1.5 PSP, upgrade it to 3.52 M33-4 – You can find the instructions here
4. After that you can now install the 3.71 M33-2 custom firmware – You can find the instructions here too. Just search

I’m buying UMDs and that’s the only way to support game creators. Playing downloaded games from your PSP is a form of Piracy. I’ve been in the PSP scene for more than a year and I’ve seen lots of gamers complaining about bad games. Now why the hell is that? It’s because more and more people are not buying UMDs anymore.
The custom firmware was a good thing because it enables you to run homebrew applications. It was meant for third party applications and not for promoting mass piracy.

@mazin : If you upgrade to 3.52 M33-4, you won’t have to use devhook anymore. If you have 1.50 firmware follow the installation instructions from step 1. But before that you must check if you have the correct requirements.

@dr : Did you follow the guide correctly? The seplugins folder should be on the root of the memory stick. and be sure you have pops.txt in the seplugins folder too. it should contain these: ms0:/seplugins/popsloader.prx
hey stylemo, remember me, i Finlay got the new 4 GB memory, when i start the 1st step and began to run KXploit Permanent Patcher, it says this application doesn’t apply to this firmware, but my psp is version 1.50 so it should work, and when i used the 32 MB memory before i got the new memory, it worked. So does this mean i should start from step 2.

@dr : the root means the first level of the drive. for example if you connect your PSP to your PC, the PSP would appear on a drive, let’s say, drive F:/, that is the root of the memory stick.
@mazin: start on step 1, but if you have patched it already then you can go on with step 2

@Chris and @dijf: Please try placing the M33Update4 folder inside the GAME folder instead of GAME150 folder. Your kernels might not be configured correctly. Thanks guys!
I am having the same problem with step 3, the file is only recognized when in the “GAME” folder, but i am still getting the 80020148 error.
i got it, go to recovery mode (turn on the psp and hold R) go to configure and change the homebrew kernel to 1.5, the exit and now the update will run

Hi stylemo, which is the root directory? Right now in my psp folder there is common folder, game folder, game 150 folder, game 310 folder, system folder and save data folder. In the game folder, there are two folders each with a EBOOT.pbp. And then, where should i locate the 1.50.pbp file?

No. The backlight just turns off. You can press the directional keys to bring the light back when the backlight turns off. Do not, I repeat, do not toggle the power button or bring it to standby mode.

One quick question in regards to upgrading to 3.52 M33-4, do I have to upgrade to 3.52 M33 first and then up to 3.52 M33-4 or upgrading from 3.30 OE-A straight to 3.52 M33-4 is okay?
And one last thing are these steps correct, im trying to go to 3.80 M33-5…

@Arcius: You’re friend is an idiot. But you can still recover a bricked PSP using Pandora’s battery.

Anyway, the first step of using Pandora’s battery is “Connect the PSP to the PC with the Memory Stick inside via the USB Connection”. But, I couldnt turn the PSP on, how can I connect it to my laptop?

I’ve downgraded to 1.5, and also ran the KXploit tool, but whenever I try to use the M33 Creator, it works up till writing 3.52, at which point it will lag but eventually finish and say to press “x”, which I do.
When I go back to the explorer, I get an odd-staticy icon for the 3.52 update, and when I press it, it loads up the PSP screen, and resets, doing nothing.
Please tell me how I’ve possibly screwed up something so incredibly simple.

@dr0bz: When I made the update I used a 1 Gig Memory Stick. Maybe you should reformat your memory stick and replace the M33 Creator files.

thank you… but i was able to update it from 3.30 OE-A to 3.52 M33-4, but when i tried the 3.71 M33 it failed & when back 2 d xmb menu…. and then what i did is i closed my psp to go to the recovery menu but it won’t open nemore.. i think i should have tried the M33 3.71 update again when it failed d first…..

i have the 3.52 version and when i m trying to upgrade at 3 80 m33 it keeps telling me that the game could not be started (80020148) what should i do??? please help

@mijert18: Yes. Did you read the requirements? It said any OE or SE firmware.
@Major Help!!: Try changing your Kernel Settings first. Then proceed with the process again.

I am about to try to upgrade my phay psp frm 3.40 OE-A to 3.52 M33. But I am still doubt on Step 3. Pls help. As you mentioned ” From the STEP 3 folder, copy the seplugins folder to the root of your memory stick.” which is on the last sentences. Can you tell me exactly what you mean by root of the your MS? Shall I replace my current seplugin folder, to the new seplugin from you? Pls help? I am still really new to this. By the way, I am using Mac OS. Does that make any different? Thanks

The only way you could get your PSP running 3.52 M33 is to downgrade it first to 1.5
Very much appreciated, worked like a charm for me with one snag. The memory stick I put in my old fat psp came from a slim psp running on 3.90official firmware. Step 2 would not execute or even appear in my game section of the psp screen untill I performed a format of the memory stick using the psp. I then placed step 2 in the 150 directory where your instructions said to and it worked perfectly, thanks!

is there a big risk that psp will brick after you downgrade?
@white bre: There’s always a risk of bricking your PSP if you don’t know what your dong with it. If you’re tinkering with the flash files from the PSP that might cause a brick. Installing custom firmwares or custom themes might cause brickage too. But if you have downgraded the PSP already, it won’t brick if you don’t do something that might modify the files from the PSP.

and is your kernel set to 1.5?
I currently have 3.40 OE-A software. As I try to install the 3.52 M33 CREATOR my screen goes black as it is supposed to, but then a messaged is displayed saying, “The game could not be started. (80020148).” Am I doing something wrong here?
@CD Make sure you read the directions very well. None the less i think this’ where your problem is.

What if you don’t want to run 1.5 homebrew game, can you do this process with out downgrading?

i have a CFW 3.10 OE-A , after i execute the 3.52 M33 CREATOR.on the next step the 3.52 M33UPDATE says “incorrect psar”
now what should i do ?
Will this turn your battery into a Pandora battery ? Or is a Pandora Battery not needed.
Will 4gb memory sticks work with this ?
@Dawid Fraczek: Pandora battery is not needed on this guide. Just to be sure use a 1Gig Memory Stick or lower. Sometimes 4Gig mem sticks causes crashes.
ive ran the step 1 which worked fine.
i ran the first part of step 2. it wrote the 3.5 firmware ok.
press x to continue.
when i run the updater it keeps saying battery has to be at least 75%. my batter is at 100% with the power plugged in.
any ideas??
dont worry.
i have a usb that doubles up as a power cable. i realised that if i take the power lead out its out, but if it was in then it whinged about 75% battery required.

Hi, I got a psp phat with 2.71 SE-C firmware, so I guess I can skip to step 2 then. It says that I should copy the M33CREATOR folder to my “ms0:/PSP/GAME150″ (for SE/OE Firmwares)
my only problem is that there is no GAME150 folder, I have a GAME folder thou…
can I copy the files there and go on from there ?

hi i have used pandoras, to downgrade a few PSP’s, no probs, now i have downgraded a friends with pandora’s, then i ran step 1 all ok, then i done the first part of step 2, but instead of the psp returning to the XMB automatically, i had to press X, once i pressed X, then it went to XMB, so i went to the M33UPDATE & selected it, i agreed to start the flashing process, then, load psar to ram…OK, then it comes up checking psar integrity… psar incorrect, then it goes back to the XMB, i have not had this on any other psp’s that i have done, can anyone help please, Thanks John

hi, im running 5.50 firmware and everytime I try to downgrade my psp I get a airmessage that says “this game cannot be started. the data is corrupted.” I have gotten this message with both firmwares 3.52 mm3 and 4.01 m33. Can anyone help me?

For those of you getting just a black screen when trying to do STEP 2, and no memory stick access (light is not blinking) try this….
Put in a small (I used 1gig, rather than my 8gig stick) stick, format, then follow the instructions…
It works that way.
