Graphika Manila Conference 2007

Graphika Manila has just launched their new website today. Yeah, it’s still built with flash. I was hoping they’d switch to a more web standard website but well, it doesn’t matter. It still looks good anyway. It has a nice navigation, a beautiful simple layout but you can only access it if you have the flash plugin. Too bad for people with disabilities. The site should focus on web accessibility too. I really agree that the Filipino designer is one of the best there is but I’ve noticed that some of those good Filipino designers are still stuck with table-based websites. But then again, it’s never too late to learn and convert. It’s not that it’s a fad but the times have proven it that standard based websites work best.

Well let me talk about the conference. The conference will be held on August 11, 2007 at the CenterStage Theater on SM Mall of Asia, Bay City, Pasay, Metro Manila. There will be new speakers this year and I’m hoping to learn something new. Six new speakers gathered from the Philippines and other parts of the world will be sharing their thoughts and secrets on design. Let me introduce to you the speakers:

  • WeWorkForThem / Designographik - the creative duo based in Minneapolis, USA
  • Steve Tirona - Photographer born in the Philippines and raised in Southern California
  • The Asylum - a design studio based in Singapore.
  • Electrolychee - an illustration and design studio based in Manila. I’ve actually seen these guys.
  • Hue Visualab - a leading broadcast design, animation and effects studio in Southeast Asia.
  • Guadakomeda - the visual identity of Paul Guadalupe whose works you can see at Pulp magazine and MTV Ink.

Last year’s Graphika Manila conference was kick ass, with the line up led by Joshua Davis. I hope this year’s conference would be better. Get your tickets now so you can avail of the early bird discount. Log on to Graphika Manila now and be sure you have your flash player enabled.

    Heya,

scalable vector graphics (ie. Flash) are part of accepted w3c ’standards’. :)

Besides these aren’t standards in the strict sense of the word (otherwise, all other web practices would be inoperable, wouldn’t they?) What you might want to call it (and what most designers have called it) is a new design framework, a semantice way of designing sites, which can be achieved using tableless-css driven designs and yes, even modular flash design.

Accessability-wise however, you’re right people do need a flash plugin, and 98% of mature internet users with internet connected computers have the flash plugin. So yeah, you’re not reaching the 2% :P
