How To Install and Play Your PSP Game Demos
PSP game demos are now available for free download on the internet. When I first bought my PSP, there were no game demos. People at the gaming stores wouldn’t let you try out the game before buying it. Now, that’s risky. New PSP owners are really lucky right now because they really experience the game first before they decide to buy it. Before, PSP owners like me only rely on online game reviews but it’s really different if you experience the game and decide on it.
So how do we install and play the game demos? First, download this file here. This is the Syphon Filter downloadable game demo. This file is zipped so extract the contents first. Then connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.

If your PSP MS drive is E, go to this directory, E:PSP/GAME and copy the extracted folder to this directory. Or of the GAME directory does not exist, you create it. In this case place the UCUS98641 folder in the GAME folder. In my experience, the game demo works even if I don’t follow the folder name provided. So you can rename the UCUS98641 to Syphon Filter if you want to.

For a list of game demos, here you go. You can click and download these game demos now. One thing though, some game demos run only on certain firmwares. I’m using a PSP with Dark Alex’s custom firmware 3.03 OE-C but don’t you worry, game demos work on Sony’s Official 3.03 firmware.
- Syphon Filter Downloadable Demo
- TOCA Race Driver 3 Challenge Downloadable Demo
- Medal of Honor: Heroes downloadable demo
- Killzone: Liberation downloadable demo
- Loco Roco Christmas Downloadable Demo
- You can download more demos here from my earlier post
More downloadables are coming soon so don’t you worry if you can’t afford to buy a UMD. Game demos are here for the rescue.

Hello there, I was able to download and install the demo on my psp. It shows on my memory card when I boot the PSP.
However when i try to start the demo it gives me a full black screen and the psp turns off ( i do see the playstation logo at first). I did try both removing and putting a UMD in it while booting the demo. My version is 3.03OE-B Thanks

Hi there Darkstar. I haven’t experienced that one yet. Maybe you must enter recovery mode by rebooting your PSP while holding down the R button. From there you must go to the CONFIGURATION then change the GAME FOLDER HOMEBREW to 3.03 Kernel. I think that should do it.
April 15th, 2007 at 2:12 am
how do u go to recovery mode? i tried it a lot of times!
April 16th, 2007 at 8:38 am
@PSPKING: You can only use recovery mode if you are using one of Dark Alex’s Custom Firmware. Some examples of this are, 3.03 OE-C, 2.71 SE-C and 3.10 OE. You can go to the recovery mode by shutting down your PSP then turning it back on again while holding the R button.
April 22nd, 2007 at 7:09 am
i have 3.10. will it work on it
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:30 pm
@shix: Of course it will. Just follow the same instructions I have here.

May 16th, 2007 at 12:44 am
my sons psp wont turn on, he interupted an update, now he just gets the power light on and no screen, can you help ??
thanks, Gary from the UK
May 16th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
hi gary harker, I’m sorry but I think your son’s PSP is bricked. Bricked means you can never use it again and it’s now useless. You should never interrupt an update because that will permanently damage your PSP. All you can do right now is bring it to the Sony service center or buy a new PSP. But I don’t think Sony will replace that because on the update, there’s a warning there that says do not turn off your PSP…

@benjahmin - slow down man. i can’t seem to understand your problem. what do you mean it shuts off? does your PSP still boot? Please tell compete details on the problem so we could troubleshoot it. Thanks.
May 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
My psp switches off as soon as it starts to run the installer.i have a v2.81 psp so pleas could you help me i have spent like 500 megabyts of dsl cap and i dont want it to go to waist. And u said i need GTA. is that the game grand theft auto your talking about because im not alowd to play that.
May 27th, 2007 at 11:55 pm
@benjahmin - If you have a 2.81 PSP Official Firmware, then you must upgrade it to 3.03 Official firmware first before you could use the downgrader. What was the 500 MB file that you downloaded? For all I know the downgrader would be that big.
Here’s what you must do step by step:
1. Upgrade to the 3.03 official firmware.
2. Acquire a Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories Unpatched Version. That’s the only way.
3. Search google for 3.03 - 1.50 downgrader.
4. After you’ve downgraded to 1.5, you can choose any custom firmware you wanna install on your PSP.
5. Be careful and read every possible readme.txt files so you won’t brick your PSP.
Oh, you wouldn’t be needing to downgrade if you wanna play the game demos. They’d run on Official firmwares for all I know.

June 12th, 2007 at 8:40 pm
maybe you should change the battery. I’m 99% sure you can buy the batery from where you purchased your PSP.
June 19th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
thnk u da prob is solved…i bought a new battery
But dere is a new prob now….I have version 3.50 n i wanna downgrade it to 1.50….can u tell me where and when an downgrader will be available
June 19th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
badar: There is no downgrader for 3.50 yet. I don’t know if Dark Alex or the other hackers are already working on the 3.50 downgrader but cross your fingers and pray, they might come up with something amazing. You can’t play homebrew right now but you still can enjoy your PSP in many ways — Watch a movie, listen to music, surf the net, browse your photos and of course play with it.
June 20th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
do you know how to make it?????i realy need it……
July 2nd, 2007 at 12:02 am
hey badar, i have good news for you. The Noobz team has finally made a downgrader for 3.50. You can now downgrade your PSP but you must have any Lumines UMD. now that wouldn’t be hard to find unlike the previous 3.03 downgrader which needs the very hard to find Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories unpatched version UMD.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
man …..i put custom firmware on my psp and when said him to restart the psp nothing comes on it nothing opens from the the recovery mode too……………help
July 5th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
oh man. did you follow the downgrade instructions very well? there’s a readme file in every one of ‘em. i’m afraid you’re PSP’s bricked. Sorry. Get a new one.
July 5th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
but why the recovery mode opens cant we do any thing with that to fix it
July 10th, 2007 at 1:22 am
why demos?? go for fulls there http://www.pspgamesites.info/
July 10th, 2007 at 8:59 am
@badar: yeah we can still fix that. Download the 1.5 Firmware update and place it on the recovery folder. Please, before tinkering with your PSP you must read every bit of instructions. Don’t get too exited or you’ll lose it all.
@flich : Why demos you say? Because first of all they’re free. I checked out your link and man, I think they’re selling pirated games. Demos are good because they let us try out the games first before we could decide to buy it or not.
July 25th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

July 28th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

August 3rd, 2007 at 4:19 am
@sdawe - What type of file did you download and where did you download it?
August 3rd, 2007 at 8:56 pm
hello stylemo ive just bought a psp and it is version 3.51 im am not that familiar with this downgrading stuff and was wondering how to do it.
August 4th, 2007 at 12:21 am
@ramsta - You can’t downgrade a 3.51 PSP. With Dark Alex gone, the homebrew scene is dead. You should’ve checked for details on the internet first before you bought your PSP. There’s a downgrader for 3.50 PSPs but for 3.51, I think you have to wait another lifetime.
My suggestion is to trade your 3.51 PSP to a 3.50 PSP or lower then downgrade it to 1.5 and then install Dark Alex’s custom firmware. That’s the only way you can have a homebrew enabled PSP.
Sorry.
August 4th, 2007 at 12:50 am
is there any way i can put games or demos on my memory card or would that not work since the psp has been updated to far?.
and i heard about a program thats being made called np9660.prx to downgrade 3.51 but next time your in google could you cheak it out because when i looked at it it made no sense

the files i downloaded are rar and i got them from the pirate bay and put it on utorrent1.7.2
August 6th, 2007 at 9:13 am
@sdawe - are you downloading iso ripped games? Sorry but we don’t support piracy here. You see game demos are legit games and is free unlike files coming from torrents which are illegal. Sorry.
August 6th, 2007 at 9:47 am
ok thank any way
August 9th, 2007 at 10:27 am

August 20th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
I think i found a way to fix my problem…
just follow these simple steps:
! Make sure your psp is off.
2 Remove the battery pack.
3 Remove the battery.
4 Put your batter on the freezer for like 15 minutes.
5 Turn your freezer temperature level to 4 or if you want to you could try it higher.
6 Remove the battery.
7 Place your psp facing down.
8Place the battery from the right side first(bottom and the top) then insert the left.
8 Put the cap back on and turn it on.
It should work because it is working fine with me.
I found an web page and it said the battery might of been old or that the fan was not working. If it works plz email me at fcortes100@yahoo.com.
August 21st, 2007 at 10:39 pm

My psp isnt working again. I had to open it and i found out it works fine when its open. when i close it it seems like it fits too tight and it turns off but placing the battery on the refrigerator works for me. if anyone know whats wrong with it plz tell me. thank you
August 22nd, 2007 at 9:14 am
I don’t know what’s wrong with your PSP, I haven’t experienced that yet. Maybe you should consider buying a new battery.
August 22nd, 2007 at 11:10 pm
I Think Something is loose inside because i turned it on with the power button facing up and it worked but then turned off and then I tried it in different angles and it was working but then turned off. How much do you think a battery will cost? thanks for your help.
August 23rd, 2007 at 1:49 pm
I think you can get batteries for $10 to $30. It really depends on where you buy it. But to be sure, go buy original Sony batteries.
August 25th, 2007 at 1:45 am
I made my psp work it was something inside that was loose that needed to be soldered. it is a white think that connect to the battery. it is located under the screen on the top right hand corner. the problem is that now my analog stick is broken and I need a new one. I was thinking of game stop but i dont know if they will sell me parts. And I found one at ebay and i could either bid for one with a starting bid of $6 somethink or i could buy one from them for $19.00. I wanted to know if there were any cheaper ones. If anyone knows where to find one for cheap plz send me an email to fcortes100@yahoo.com
thank you.

September 11th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Hi its me again.
this time i need your help with some trouble shooting.
i’ve tried like a thousand times to connect to the internet on my psp but it doesn’t work. it works fine and dandy until the part where it obtains the ip adress. it just says it timed out. i use a wirless router and i now have a v 3.30 psp
a lot of sites say i need a wep key but wat the hell is that ???
pls reply
thanks
September 11th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
A WEP key is like a password so you could connect to your Wireless network. You can create a WEP key by accessing the router. The usual address is 192.168.1.1
From there, navigate to the where the WEp key is and create a WEP key. WEp keys are usually made up of numbers so it’s easier to remember. My suggestion is use your phone number.
After you’ve setup your WEP key on tyour wireless router, create a new connection on your PSP. Scan for network connections then follow the instructions. When you are asked for the WEP key, type it in using your PSP on screen keyboard. Save your connections and exit.
Now try it on your PSP browser. I hope it works.
September 12th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Sorry i dont understand where and how do i make a WEP key ???
September 13th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Help!
My PSP hangs when I try to boot demos…
I tried changing the ‘Game Folder Homebrew’ but I can only choose from 1.50 or 3.52.
It’s not mine and I need to make it run again.
Help!!!
September 13th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
@Benjahmin: a WEP key is a password so if you are connecting to someone’s WiFi, you better ask for his WEP key. If you own the wireless router, you can just disable the WEP key so you don’t have to go through it.
@Garry Nerman: Just copy the demo into the PSP/GAME and it will run flawlessly
September 22nd, 2007 at 9:44 am

Hi Stylemo. My son has a new PSP version 3.60. We have just come back from Phuket where we bought 3 pirated games. How do I install them to use? or is it dangerous? should we just bin them? After reading your previous questions and answers I am a little concerned now and definately do not want to destroy the PSP for a few cheap games. Would appreciate your help.
Cheers.
